Indian startups funding hits 2025 low at $621m in July: research
Venture capital funding for Indian startups fell to US$621 million in July 2025, marking a 42% year-on-year decline, according to YourStory Research.
This is the lowest monthly funding recorded so far in 2025.
The drop is largely due to the absence of deals over US$50 million.
July also saw a 41% decrease from June’s funding total.
Despite the decline in funding, the number of deals rose to 102 from 91 in June. Early-stage startups attracted the most funding at US$262 million across 79 deals.
Fintech led in sector-wise funding, followed by cleantech and direct-to-consumer companies.
Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi-NCR remained the top cities for venture funding.
The cautious investment environment is attributed to ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty and investor hesitancy around the impact of AI.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Small-deal dominance reflects fundamental shift in investor strategy
July’s absence of deals above $50 million isn’t an anomaly but part of a broader structural change in India’s VC landscape.
Even during 2024’s rebound year when India saw $13.7 billion in VC investments, 95% of all deals remained below $50 million1. This pattern shows investors have shifted toward smaller, more cautious bets rather than the mega-rounds that previously drove headline numbers.
The math is telling: July 2025 had 102 deals totaling $621 million, averaging just $6 million per deal. This contrasts sharply with the ecosystem’s earlier phase when fewer, larger deals dominated funding totals.
This shift reflects investors’ focus on proven business models and sustainable unit economics rather than aggressive growth-at-all-costs strategies that characterized previous years.
2️⃣ India’s funding slowdown mirrors global VC caution beyond macro factors
