🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ India’s solar IPO landscape shows both promise and pitfalls

Emmvee’s planned US$351 million IPO follows a pattern of significant capital raises in India’s solar manufacturing sector, though with mixed outcomes for investors.

Sterling & Wilson Solar’s 2019 IPO raised a comparable INR 28.8 billion ($411 million), but its shares initially dropped 12% below the offer price, highlighting the market’s cautious approach to renewable valuations1.

The sector has since seen varied performance. Waaree Energies and Premier Energies showed strong post-IPO performance, with Premier reaching a P/E ratio of 51.85, while companies like ACME Solar faced revenue declines2. This suggests that despite strong sector fundamentals, investors discriminate between solar companies based on execution capability and financial health.

India’s solar manufacturing IPOs have typically commanded premium valuations, with Sterling & Wilson initially valued at 19x FY2019 earnings despite having to reduce its initial target from INR 45 billion to INR 31.3 billion due to market conditions1.

2️⃣ Solar manufacturing expansion aligns with India’s ambitious renewable targets

Emmvee’s capital raise reflects the broader push to develop domestic solar manufacturing capacity to support India’s goal of 500 GW renewable energy by 2030.

The country’s installed solar capacity has grown substantially, reaching between 92-98 GW according to recent data, with solar accounting for 73% of new power capacity additions3.

This expansion is strategically important as India works to reduce reliance on imported solar components while capturing more value in the renewable supply chain.
