Vertex Ventures invests in Indian solar financing startup
India-based solar financing platform Metafin has raised US$10 million in a series A funding round that includes both equity and debt.
The round was led by Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia & India, with participation from Prime Venture Partners, Varanium Capital, Northern Arc, and AU Small Finance Bank.
The funds will be used to expand operations into new states, enhance technology and credit infrastructure, and strengthen its presence in existing markets.
Metafin has quadrupled its project portfolio over the past year and financed over 3,500 solar projects across 2,500 villages.
It uses a technology-driven financing model, supporting India’s renewable energy targets for 2030.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ India’s rural solar financing bridges critical gaps in renewable energy transition
Metafin’s funding comes at a pivotal moment as India pushes toward its ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, with solar playing a crucial role in this expansion1.
Despite solar capacity reaching approximately 92 GW nationwide, the rural sector has remained largely underserved by traditional financing models that weren’t designed for smaller, distributed projects2.
This rural financing gap is particularly significant considering India ranks fifth globally in solar PV deployment, indicating strong growth in urban and industrial sectors while rural areas lag behind3.
By specifically targeting rural MSMEs with productive-use solar financing, Metafin addresses a critical market segment that can simultaneously boost rural economic development while contributing to national renewable goals.
The model of integrating local installers (500+ partners) with technology-driven assessment has proven effective, as demonstrated by Metafin’s ability to finance over 3,500 solar projects across 2,500 villages, creating India’s largest rural off-grid solar portfolio4.
2️⃣ Technology-driven lending transforms viability of rural solar financing
Metafin’s tech-first approach to credit assessment has shown how innovation can cut operating costs by up to 80% in rural solar financing, making previously unviable projects economically feasible4.
This trend extends beyond Metafin, as other specialized NBFCs like Namdev Finvest and Satin Creditcare are also entering the solar financing space with customized solutions for underserved communities and small businesses5.
