Indian services firm Urban Company revenue up 37%
Urban Company reported a 37% year-on-year rise in operating revenue to 380 crore rupee (US$42.8 million) for the September quarter, while net losses widened to 59 crore rupee (US$6.6 million) from 1.8 crore rupee (US$202,755 million) a year earlier.
The Gurugram-based at-home services provider attributed much of the loss to a 44-crore rupee (US$5 million) shortfall from its Insta Help service, launched in March to let users book house help within 30 minutes.
India contributed 262 crore rupee (US$29.5 million) of total revenue, with international revenue up 8% to 41 crore rupee (US$4.6 million).
The company, which operates in India, Singapore, and the UAE, is winding down its Saudi Arabia operations after shifting to a joint venture model.
Urban Company serves 7.4 million annual transacting users across 51 cities, with over 50,000 monthly active service professionals.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Insta Help unit economics still unclear
- Urban Company booked Rs 44 crore in Insta Help losses this quarter 1. Excluding that line, operations were profitable on an adjusted EBITDA basis, which means earnings before interest taxes depreciation amortization 1. The firm has not disclosed retention, booking frequency, take rate meaning commission per transaction, or customer acquisition payback period meaning time to recover marketing spend 1. Unclear unit economics make it hard to judge if about Rs 400 average order value tied to quick house‑help can reach profitability in external analyses 2.
- The India Consumer Services division, excluding Insta Help, posted adjusted EBITDA of Rs 18 crore, or 2.4% of net transaction value, which is the worth of completed bookings after cancellations and discounts 1. That was 3.1% a year earlier due to higher spend on training for providers and fulfillment operations 1.
Verification APIs for quick house‑help peers
- Quick house‑help increases safety risk 3. Fewer than 10% of employers, which means households hiring domestic workers, complete full background checks while most rely on ID copies 3.
- Verification startups offer KYC (Know Your Customer), criminal checks, or police APIs 3. Some vendors say they connect to UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India which manages the Aadhaar identity system) or NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited which maintains PAN tax identification records) to serve Urban Company rivals and new entrants 3. Design should match domestic worker checks in India, which vary by state, and some jurisdictions take 21 days 4.
