OpenAI requests Indian court to dismiss copyright lawsuit
OpenAI has requested that an Indian court dismiss a lawsuit filed by a group of book publishers alleging copyright infringement.
The Federation of Indian Publishers claims that OpenAI’s ChatGPT generates book summaries and extracts from unlicensed copies, thus violating intellectual property rights.
The lawsuit was initiated in December by FIP on behalf of its members, including Rupa Publications, S Chand and Co, as well as international publishers such as Bloomsbury, Penguin Random House, Cambridge University Press, and Pan Macmillan.
OpenAI contends that its chatbot operates in compliance with fair use standards by utilizing publicly available data.
This lawsuit follows a previous case in November 2024, in which the news agency ANI accused OpenAI of using its content to train language models and producing direct outputs through ChatGPT.
OpenAI has stated that US legal requirements necessitate the preservation of training data amid ongoing litigation, complicating requests for data removal.
