Indian news giants sue OpenAI over copyright violations

Digital news organizations in India, supported by billionaires Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for allegedly using copyrighted content without permission.

NDTV, Network18, the Indian Express, and Hindustan Times submitted a petition in a New Delhi court, claiming ChatGPT scraped their content.

The Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) representing about 20 media companies, supports the case, citing threats to Indian publisher’s copyrights.

The Times of India, also a member of the DNPA, has not joined this lawsuit.

While OpenAI has partnered with international media outlets like Time and Le Monde, no such agreements exist with Indian publishers, which they claim negatively impacts their businesses.
