🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Existing backers stayed with Sindhuja through tougher markets

  • Sindhuja raised a US$5 million pre-series D round from current investors, which suggests they still back the company through a weaker economy 1.
  • The company has raised money in rough periods before, including its series A during India’s IL&FS (Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services) crisis and its series B during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic 1.
  • This round is smaller than the US$14.5 million (1.2 billion rupees (US$12.6 million)) series C from March 2024, so it reads more like follow-on funding than a fresh step up in financing 2.

Sindhuja’s board brings finance and technology depth

  • Sindhuja’s leadership combines financial services experience with senior technology know-how, which gives the company an edge as it grows 3.
  • The co-founders held leadership roles at Utkarsh Small Finance Bank, an Indian lender focused on underserved customers, where they built experience in scaling microfinance plus MSME (micro, small, and medium enterprises)/agri lending 3.
  • The board includes an independent director who was group CIO (Chief Information Officer) at Access Bank, a large African commercial bank, and president & CTO at Reliance Capital, an Indian financial services company 3.
  • That mix of finance and tech leadership fits Sindhuja’s focus on technology-enabled solutions and could help it build a model that reaches markets often left out by larger institutions 3.
