Indian logistic firm Shiprocket launches AI platform for MSMEs

Logistics technology firm Shiprocket has launched Shunya.ai, an AI platform designed to support MSMEs in India.

Announced on July 11, 2025, Shunya.ai is built domestically and tailored for Indian commerce workflows.

Developed in collaboration with US-based Ultrasafe Inc., it integrates voice, text, and image intelligence across more than nine Indian languages.

The models are trained on Indian commerce data and hosted entirely in India, supporting the country’s focus on digital sovereignty and data localization.

The platform offers tools for catalog management, campaign creation, voice-to-order automation, and invoice generation, starting at 499 rupee (US$5.8) per month.

Shunya.ai will be integrated into Shiprocket’s platform, reaching its base of 150,000 sellers.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ India’s push for AI sovereignty reflects broader digital nationalism trends

Shiprocket’s emphasis on a “sovereign AI model” aligns with India’s growing focus on data localization and digital independence that began intensifying around 2020.

The company’s decision to host all data within India and create a joint venture structure where “India-specific improvements are fully owned” demonstrates how digital sovereignty has evolved from policy discussions to commercial implementation.

The partnership with L&T’s Cloudfiniti for GPU infrastructure highlights India’s developing technical capabilities to support compute-intensive AI workloads domestically, reducing dependence on foreign cloud providers.

This model of collaborative development, where foundational technology comes from international partners (Ultrasafe) but deployment and customization remain under Indian control, represents a pragmatic approach to balancing technological advancement with digital sovereignty.

2️⃣ MSME AI adoption shows dramatic acceleration from early experimentation to mainstream use

The launch of Shunya.ai at ₹499 per month represents a significant shift in AI accessibility for small businesses compared to just a few years ago.

In 2018, AI adoption among Indian manufacturing SMEs was still in early stages with many businesses “struggling to understand its implications and economics” 1, contrasting sharply with 2025 data showing approximately 78% of small businesses now using AI in at least one business function 2.
