Indian IT giant to buy 75% of Australian cloud firm for $153m

Infosys will acquire a 75% stake in Versent Group, a cloud services provider owned by Australia’s Telstra Group, for AU$233.3 million (US$153 million).

Versent serves Australian clients in sectors including finance, energy, utilities, government, and education.

The deal is expected to close by the second half of fiscal 2026, pending approval from Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board and Competition and Consumer Commission.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Infosys follows proven acquisition playbook for geographic expansion

The Versent acquisition demonstrates Infosys’ systematic approach to mergers and acquisitions, which focuses on three strategic areas: strengthening digital service capabilities, deepening vertical expertise, and expanding geographic footprint1.

This follows a well-established pattern of acquiring local expertise in key markets, similar to their previous Australian acquisition of The Missing Link, a cybersecurity firm that added over 200 professionals to enhance their cyber defense capabilities1.

The company has consistently used acquisitions to build regional presence while gaining specialized talent, as seen in their purchases of Fluido in the Nordics for €65 million and in-tech in Germany, which brought 2,200 engineering professionals across multiple countries1.

By acquiring 75% of Versent while allowing Telstra to retain 25%, Infosys maintains its strategy of preserving local relationships and brand autonomy, similar to how they structured the Fluido deal to maintain customer relationships while leveraging global resources2.

2️⃣ Strategic timing aligns with Australia’s cloud market expansion

The $153 million investment comes as Australia’s public cloud market is experiencing explosive growth, valued at $23.96 billion in 2024 and projected to reach $150.97 billion by 2033, representing a 20.21% compound annual growth rate3.

With Versent generating $141 million in FY25 revenue, Infosys is paying a 10.8x revenue multiple to access this high-growth market, positioning itself to capture a larger share of the projected $256 billion APAC cloud AI market expected by 20304.

The acquisition brings 650 engineers with established expertise in government, finance, and utilities sectors—precisely the verticals driving much of Australia’s digital transformation spending4.

This timing is particularly strategic given that Australian organizations are expected to increase public cloud spending significantly, with major providers planning substantial investments in local data centers to support growing demand5.
