Indian insurtech firm reportedly has laid off 100 employees

Zopper, an insurance-focused SaaS startup, has laid off around 100 employees since the beginning of 2025, according to sources.

The most recent layoffs occurred earlier this week, affecting about 50 employees from the tech and product teams.

This follows a previous round of layoffs in the same teams, which resulted in 20 job losses.

These layoffs are part of broader cost-cutting measures despite a 170% increase in operating revenue in FY24, reaching 438.7 crore rupee (US$51.37 million).

Zopper raised US$25 million in a series D funding round earlier this year, bringing its total raised capital to US$121 million.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Insurtech’s growth paradox: balancing revenue surge with widening losses

Zopper’s situation reflects a common pattern in scaling insurtech companies, where revenue growth often comes at the expense of profitability in early stages.

The company’s 170% revenue surge to INR 438.7 Cr in FY24 was accompanied by a 144% increase in losses to INR 115.2 Cr, suggesting that rapid growth is coming at a significant cost.

This challenging financial equation comes despite Zopper’s aggressive expansion to over 1,200 cities and partnerships with more than 60 distribution partners including Amazon and Xiaomi 1.

The layoffs occurring shortly after raising $25 million in Series D funding suggest investors may be pushing for a course correction toward profitability rather than continued aggressive expansion.

2️⃣ Insurance industry’s digital transformation driving workforce restructuring

Zopper’s decision to cut approximately 100 jobs, particularly from tech and product teams, reflects the broader insurance industry’s complex relationship with technology adoption.

Industry surveys show 78% of insurance professionals plan to increase tech spending in 2025, with AI being the top priority for 36% of respondents 2.

This prioritization is creating pressure to reallocate resources toward specific technologies, potentially explaining why Zopper might reduce headcount in some technical areas while presumably investing in others.
