Indian house-help startup Pronto raises $20m
Pronto, an India-based instant house help startup, has raised US$20 million from US investor Lachy Groom, extending its earlier round to US$45 million and valuing the company at US$200 million.
The company said the money will go mainly to adding service professionals.
Supply shortages hit Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru in April, when users reported limited booking slots and Pronto’s monthly orders rose 40% from March.
The fundraise brings Pronto’s total funding to US$58 million.
Competition rises in India’s quick home services market, where rival Snabbit recently raised US$56 million at a US$350 million valuation and Urban Company faces pressure from newer venture-backed startups.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
10-minute service carries a steep cost for investors and workers
- The three biggest quick home services platforms spent a combined US$10-11 million in February alone as they chased fast growth 1.
- Pronto’s average order value sat near 120 rupees (US$1.3)-125, propped up by incentives such as Re 1 per hour introductory pricing to win users 1.
- At Pronto, monthly pay for new hires fell from 28,000 rupees (US$290) to 24,000 rupees (US$250) for an eight-hour day 2.
- Workers also face algorithmic penalties, meaning software-based performance rules that can cut take-home pay 3.
Putting domestic work on platforms brings new forms of control
- Platforms such as Pronto move pay to direct bank transfers, but they also replace informal arrangements with algorithmic management, where software assigns jobs and tracks performance 3.
- That setup keeps domestic workers under constant monitoring. Customer ratings can directly lower future bookings and income 3.
- The approach also brings safety risks. At Pronto, 99% of workers are women who enter many private homes alone 4.
- Because these workers are classified as gig workers, they fall outside safety rules such as India’s POSH Act, the country’s law against workplace sexual harassment, which leaves limited recourse after assault 5.
