Indian healthcare firm ex-CEO denies fraud allegations, scrutiny
Vivek Tiwari, the former CEO and founder of India’s Medikabazaar, has denied allegations of financial fraud, calling them misleading and inaccurate.
The claims, which include misuse of company funds and breach of trust, stem from an investigation led by Uniqus India, Alvarez & Marsal, and Rashmikant & Partners.
The probe was initiated after PwC raised concerns about Medikabazaar overstating its FY23 revenue by over 50%.
Tiwari, who stepped down as CEO in 2024 and was recently removed from the board, maintains his innocence and has expressed confidence that the truth will emerge.
Medikabazaar is also facing legal and financial troubles, including a claim from series C investors for 278.7 crore rupee (US$32.46 million) due to financial misreporting and tax demands.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The widening governance gap in India’s startup ecosystem
Corporate governance issues at Medikabazaar reflect a troubling pattern among high-growth Indian startups, where rapid scaling often outpaces governance structures.
Despite investment from reputable backers, startups increasingly face governance challenges stemming from complex ownership structures, inadequate transparency, and insufficient oversight mechanisms 1.
The pressure to achieve rapid growth and profitability creates an environment where some founders and executives may make ethically questionable decisions, particularly around financial reporting and disclosure 1.
This pattern has been recognized as a trend affecting promising businesses across India’s startup landscape, with accounting scandals shifting notably from public companies to private, venture-backed startups 2.
The governance failures at Medikabazaar, with allegations of 50% revenue overstatement, showcase how even well-funded companies ($194M raised) can develop significant internal control deficiencies without robust accountability systems.
2️⃣ Financial misreporting: A growing crisis across private markets
Medikabazaar’s alleged revenue inflation by over 50% reflects a broader pattern of financial misrepresentation in private companies, exacerbated by today’s challenging fundraising environment.
Investment fraud reached unprecedented levels in 2023, with Americans losing over $10 billion, representing a 14% increase from the previous year 3.
