1️⃣ The strategic shift from D2C to omnichannel in India’s retail landscape

Wakefit’s IPO plan reveals a strategic transition that many successful direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands are making in India’s evolving retail market.

The mattress brand plans to use its IPO proceeds to establish 111 new company-owned company-operated (COCO) regular stores and one jumbo store, signaling a major shift from its origins as an online-focused mattress seller in 20161.

This offline expansion reflects the path of successful D2C brands globally, where physical retail becomes important for sustainable growth once digital acquisition costs rise beyond sustainable levels.

The company’s revenue breakdown highlights this evolution: while starting with mattresses (Rs 567.52 crore), they’ve expanded to furniture (Rs 301.22 crore) and furnishings (Rs 117.62 crore) – product categories where in-person shopping experiences drive conversion2.

This strategic pivot has contributed to Wakefit’s impressive revenue growth from Rs 199 crore in FY20 to Rs 1,017 crore in FY24, a 5x increase that demonstrates the effectiveness of their evolving business model1.

2️⃣ India’s startup IPO momentum reflects market maturation

Wakefit joins a surge of Indian startups preparing for public markets, highlighting the increasing maturity of India’s startup ecosystem and capital markets.
