🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Rising self-employment creates untapped fintech opportunity

India’s self-employed workforce has significantly increased from 52.2% in 2017-18 to 58.4% in 2023-24 according to the Economic Survey, representing a structural shift in the economy 1.

This growing demographic often lacks structured financial tools that salaried employees typically access through employers, creating a substantial market gap that Bachatt is targeting.

The startup’s focus on small daily investments (INR 100-200) specifically addresses the irregular income patterns common among self-employed workers, who now represent nearly 6 out of 10 workers in India.

This approach aligns with government initiatives like Mudra Yojana that have been supporting the entrepreneurial shift. However, the Economic Survey notes many self-employed individuals still need improved financial support systems 1.

Bachatt’s target demographic of those earning INR 30K-70K monthly represents a specific middle-income segment that traditionally falls between microfinance offerings and premium banking services.

2️⃣ Fintech investments remain robust despite economic headwinds

Despite India’s GDP growth slowing to 5.4% in Q2FY25 and rising economic concerns, investor confidence in fintech remains strong with over $2.5 billion invested in fintech startups in 2024 alone 2, 3.

Bachatt secured its $4 million seed round at pre-revenue stage, demonstrating continued investor willingness to back early-stage fintech concepts addressing specific market gaps.

This investment pattern mirrors the broader trend in India’s fintech sector, which was valued at $194.1 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 16.8% through 2028 4.
