Indian fintech firm Cashfree names ex-Barclays exec as CFO
Bengaluru-based online payment processor Cashfree Payments has appointed Piyush Anchliya as its new chief financial officer (CFO). He succeeds Vikas Guru, who held the role for nearly four years.
Anchliya has over 15 years of experience in the financial services sector. He previously served as CFO at Bandhan Asset Management Company and has worked at Barclays Investment Bank in New York and Lehman Brothers in London.
At Cashfree, he will oversee financial strategies and operations, reporting to co-founder Akash Sinha.
Cashfree processes US$80 billion annually for over 800,000 businesses and holds a Reserve Bank of India license as a payment aggregator and mobile wallet issuer. Recently, it raised US$53 million in a funding round led by Krafton and Apis.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Strategic leadership restructuring signals Cashfree’s growth ambitions
Piyush Anchliya’s appointment as CFO is part of a broader pattern of leadership evolution at Cashfree, coming just two years after the company elevated executives to Chief Business Officer and Chief Technology Officer roles in 2023 1.
This leadership restructuring follows Cashfree’s substantial $53 million funding round led by Krafton in February 2025, which valued the company at $700 million and signaled its expansion plans into international markets, particularly the MENA region 2.
Anchliya’s background in traditional financial institutions (Barclays and Lehman Brothers) and asset management (Bandhan AMC) suggests Cashfree is prioritizing experienced financial leadership as it manages increasingly complex operations processing $80 billion annually for 800,000+ businesses.
The timing is particularly strategic as Cashfree has secured all necessary regulatory credentials from the Reserve Bank of India to operate as a payment aggregator both domestically and cross-border, while also having permission to issue mobile wallets.
2️⃣ Indian fintech companies building financial expertise as they scale
Cashfree’s hiring of Piyush Anchliya with his 15+ years of financial services experience reflects how Indian payment processors are prioritizing traditional finance expertise as they mature beyond their startup phases.
The company processes over $80 billion in transactions annually and supports up to 12,000 transactions per second, creating complex financial operations that require sophisticated management approaches common in established financial institutions 2.
As Cashfree claims to hold over 50% market share among payment processors in India, their financial management needs have evolved beyond basic startup operations to require expertise in capital allocation, international regulatory compliance, and institutional investor relations 1.
The recruitment of executives with experience at global financial powerhouses like Barclays Investment Bank and Lehman Brothers signals a recognition that scaling fintech operations requires traditional financial discipline alongside technological innovation.
