Indian EV maker Ultraviolette plans $82m plant

Ultraviolette Automotive, a Bengaluru-based electric two-wheeler maker, plans to invest 7.8 billion rupees (US$81.93 million) in a new plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

The plant will expand its manufacturing capacity and support the company’s move into India’s mass-market electric two-wheeler segment as demand rises.

The factory will start with an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles and complement Ultraviolette’s existing facility near Bengaluru, which can produce up to 50,000 units a year.

Ultraviolette plans to launch the Shockwave motorcycle for under 200,000 rupees (US$2,100) and the Tesseract scooter for below 150,000 rupees (US$1,600).

Government data shows India’s electric two-wheeler sales topped 1.03 million units in the first eight months of 2026. The category’s share of overall two-wheeler sales crossed 10% for the first time in August.

The founders said they chose Hosur partly for its proximity to Ultraviolette’s Bengaluru research and development center and access to an automotive supply chain.
