Indian EV tech firm Vimag starts magnet-free motor production
Vimag Labs, a Bengaluru-based company developing magnet-free motor systems, said on October 13 it had started manufacturing at its first facility in Jhajjar, Haryana, and had exported its first batch.
The company plans to invest about 500 million rupees (US$5.21 million) in phased manufacturing in India, with spending tied to customer demand and product needs.
Its manufacturing network is designed to scale to 10,000 motor and control systems a month as volumes grow.
Vimag is initially focusing on mid-power systems, with systems rated at 570 kW and above planned as customer programs mature.
Vimag describes itself as a developer of software-defined magnet-free motors.
India remains dependent on imported rare-earth magnets for electric vehicle motor production.
Motor and controller systems may qualify for India’s auto production-linked incentive scheme, subject to eligibility rules on localisation, investment, and sales. Vimag’s eligibility has not been established.
The company also said it had recently raised US$5 million in a series A round led by Accel and had signed a manufacturing memorandum of understanding with Jendamark Pvt Ltd.
