Indian EV finance startup Astranova raises $6.4m series A

Astranova Mobility, an India-based EV financing and asset management startup, has raised 600 million rupees (US$6.4 million) in a series A equity round led by India-based venture capital firm (VC) IvyCap Ventures.

Existing investors Asian Development Bank and Advantedge Founders also took part in the round, while US-based Trucks Venture Capital participated as a new investor.

Since launch, Astranova has financed and supported services for over 25,000 EVs.

A significant part of the funding will be used to deepen Astranova’s data, AI, and engineering capabilities.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This funding tackles the financing gap for India’s small fleet operators

  • Astranova Mobility operates as an EV-focused financier that tackles a market failure in commercial vehicle funding 1.
  • Many lenders reject EV loans for small and medium-sized fleet operators because resale values remain uncertain, plus operators often carry thin balance sheets 1.
  • The company says fewer than 10% of these operators can get financing at workable rates 1.
  • It relies on data plus asset-backed structures that tie repayments to vehicle performance 1.
  • After deploying nearly 20,000 EVs, it aims to top 40,000 within a year using the new capital 1.

Astranova rebrand ties to a wider sustainable-transport push

  • By using operating data to cut perceived EV-asset risk for banks plus other lenders, the approach could translate to emerging economies where financing blocks adoption more than technology does 1.
  • Its plans also cover future powertrains such as hydrogen, so the business treats financing as a platform for sustainable transport 2.
  • It earlier said it raised 240 million rupees (US$2.59 million) in early 2024 in a seed round led by ADB Ventures, the venture arm of the Asian Development Bank, plus AdvantEdge 2.
