Indian EV bike startup Ultraviolette nets $21m for global growth

Ultraviolette, an Indian electric motorcycle company, has raised US$21 million in an all-equity round led by TDK Corporation’s venture arm to support global expansion.

The Bengaluru-based company plans to increase its presence in Europe, enter Latin America and Southeast Asia, and expand its product portfolio to 14 models by early 2027.

Ultraviolette’s vehicles start at US$2,000 in India, with scooters priced at US$1,370.

The startup has a manufacturing facility in Bengaluru with a current capacity of 30,000 units, and intends to expand this to 60,000, with a larger site planned for further scaling.

Ultraviolette has sold over 3,000 motorcycles in India and aims for 10,000 sales later this year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Premium positioning creates domestic market limitations but international opportunities

Ultraviolette’s pricing strategy reveals a fundamental tension in India’s electric motorcycle market.

While the company prices its motorcycles between $2,000-$10,000, India’s EV adoption has been primarily driven by affordability, with three-wheelers accounting for 83% of EV sales in 2018-19 specifically because they offered economical transportation solutions1.

The company’s F77 model was priced at approximately $4,640-$5,550 in 2023, positioning it well above the typical price-sensitive Indian consumer’s range2.

This premium positioning explains why Ultraviolette sold only 1,000 F77 units as of January 2023, despite India’s two-wheeler market representing 79% of all vehicles on Indian roads—over 170 million units12.

The international expansion strategy makes strategic sense because Ultraviolette’s performance-focused motorcycles align better with markets where consumers view motorcycles as lifestyle products rather than purely utilitarian transportation.

2️⃣ Market consolidation forces differentiation through international expansion

India’s electric two-wheeler market has rapidly consolidated, creating pressure for smaller players to seek growth elsewhere.

The top four brands now control over 80% of market share, while established players like TVS Motor achieved 59% sales growth and Bajaj Auto saw 64.9% increases in the first half of 20253.
