🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Battery swapping finds market fit in India after global failures
Battery Smart’s continued fundraising success highlights a fascinating contrast with previous battery swapping ventures. Better Place, once the poster child for battery swapping, raised $850 million but filed for bankruptcy after selling just 750 cars and accumulating over $500 million in losses 1.
The key difference appears to be target market selection: Battery Smart focuses on two-wheelers and three-wheelers in dense urban environments, with the three-wheeler segment currently holding 55% of India’s battery swapping market 2.
This approach addresses a genuine market need in India’s commercial vehicle segment, particularly in last-mile delivery and shared mobility, where minimizing vehicle downtime is critical for business operations.
Battery Smart’s 36% market share in India’s battery swapping segment suggests their business model has found product-market fit in a way Better Place never achieved with passenger cars 3.
The success demonstrates how business model innovation often requires finding the right application context rather than merely developing new technology.
2️⃣ Economics of battery-as-a-service transforms EV adoption barriers
Battery Smart’s growth reflects the powerful economics behind the battery-as-a-service (BaaS) model that’s reshaping EV adoption in emerging markets.
