Indian education financing firm GyanDhan nets $5.8m series A

Education financing platform GyanDhan has raised 50 crore rupees (US$5.8 million) in its series A funding round.

The investment was made by edtech firm Classplus and venture capital fund Pravega Ventures.

The funds will be used to scale GyanDhan’s operations and expand its physical presence to over 50 tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

The company aims to double its partnerships with financial institutions from 15 to 30.

GyanDhan, founded by IIT alumni Ankit Mehra and Jainesh Sinha, focuses on making higher education financing more accessible for Indian students studying in India and abroad.

The company plans to grow its loan originations to 18,000 crore rupees (US$2.1 billion) over the next three years.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ India’s education financing gap represents a massive untapped market

GyanDhan’s focus on education loans addresses a critical market gap in India, where education loan penetration remains under 20% compared to over 45% in developed markets like the US 1.

This disparity exists despite India having over 600 million people under age 25 and more than 260 million students across 1.5 million schools and 50,000 higher education institutions 2.

The concentration of India’s loan portfolio (83% in just the top 10 states) reveals significant untapped potential in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities 3, explaining why GyanDhan’s expansion to 50+ such cities is strategically important.

The financing landscape remains highly fragmented, with cultural factors playing a role. Many Indian families view education as a parental responsibility, leading to personal loans or family borrowing rather than formal education loans, especially in rural areas 1.

With only 1 in 10 young Indians currently accessing higher education (predominantly from wealthier segments), GyanDhan’s goal to facilitate INR 18,000 crore in loan originations addresses a clear market need for improved financing access.

2️⃣ Tech-enabled distribution is transforming education access in India

GyanDhan’s technology-focused approach aligns with broader trends in India’s education landscape, where nearly 400 million smartphone users are driving mobile-first learning solutions 2.
