Indian defense tech startup Armory secures $1.5m

Armory, a defense-technology startup focused on counter-drone systems, has secured 13 crore rupees (US$1.5 million) in a funding round led by growX ventures.

Other participants included Industrial 47, Antler, AC Ventures, and Dexter Ventures.

Founded in 2024 by IIT-Bombay alumnus Amardeep Singh, Armory develops Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) to detect and neutralize rogue drones.

The company’s flagship product, SURGE, was developed in six months and has successfully undergone field trials with multiple Army regiments.

Armory’s systems use its proprietary Samaritan OS, an AI-based operating system designed for real-time adaptability.

The startup plans to use the funds to enhance research and development and to scale manufacturing operations.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The rapidly evolving drone threat creates critical counter-drone opportunities

The history of drone threats stretches back remarkably far to 1849 when Austrian forces used unmanned bomb-carrying balloons against Venice, but today’s challenge is far more acute and sophisticated 1.

Modern commercial drones have created an asymmetric warfare challenge since around 2010, when consumer models like the Parrot AR Drone first appeared, followed by DJI’s game-changing Phantom series in 2013 2.

Recent conflicts involving Ukraine and Israel demonstrate how even consumer drones can significantly hamper military operations, with many defense systems struggling against smaller drones flying at low altitudes 3.

This escalating threat landscape explains why Armory’s counter-UAS technology is emerging at a critical moment, with the global drone market valued at $32 billion in 2023 and projected to exceed $91 billion by 2030 4.

The challenge for counter-drone startups lies in the persistent cat-and-mouse dynamic between drone and counter-drone technologies, requiring continuous innovation to address rapidly evolving threats 3.

2️⃣ India’s defense-tech startup ecosystem is hitting an inflection point

India’s defense-tech startup landscape has grown significantly, from virtually nothing to over 1,000 companies in just a few years, driven by government initiatives like iDEX and the Make in India campaign 5, 6.
