Indian court orders Wikipedia to remove defamatory content
The operator of Wikipedia, the Wikimedia Foundation, has been ordered by an Indian court to remove statements deemed defamatory from the Wikipedia page of domestic news agency ANI.
This follows a defamation lawsuit ANI filed, claiming it was described as a government “propaganda tool.”
ANI is seeking 20 million rupees (US$240,000) in damages and an apology.
The Wikimedia Foundation has not commented on the ruling or indicated whether it plans to appeal.
Previously, Wikimedia expressed concerns about free speech, warning that content restrictions could limit access to information.
The case highlights ongoing tensions between tech platforms and content regulation in India.
