Indian coffee brand Blue Tokai secures $25m to open new store

Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters has secured US$25 million in bridge funding from existing investors A91 Partners, Anicut, Verlinvest, and 12 Flags.

The India-based coffee chain said the funds will support retail expansion, infrastructure upgrades, and international growth in Dubai and Japan.

In India, the money will also go toward opening new stores and expanding roasteries and bakery facilities in Bengaluru and Gurugram.

Blue Tokai operates cafes in several Indian cities and has raised over US$105 million to date, including a US$30 million series C round in August 2024.

The company reported revenue growth from 41 crore rupee (US$4.92 million) in FY21 to 216 crore rupee (US$25.9 million) in FY24, according to TheKredible.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Ambitious growth targets reflect betting on specialty coffee premiumization

Blue Tokai’s decision to double their revenue target from Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 2,000 crore reveals a strategic bet on capturing a significant market share in India’s premium coffee segment.

The broader Indian coffee market is projected to grow at a modest 4.3% annually, reaching $2.64 billion by 20321. However, the specialty coffee market shows stronger momentum, growing at 10.4% CAGR with projections to reach $183 billion by 20302.

This growth differential explains why Blue Tokai feels confident doubling their targets. They are positioning themselves to benefit from the premiumization trend rather than competing in the commoditized general coffee market.

The company’s five-fold revenue growth from Rs 41 crore in FY21 to Rs 216 crore in FY24 demonstrates their ability to capture this premium segment demand, justifying their aggressive expansion plans despite the broader market’s slower growth trajectory.

2️⃣ International expansion faces saturated market realities

Blue Tokai’s expansion into Dubai comes at a challenging time, as the emirate already hosts over 4,800 coffee shops creating “intense competition and market saturation”3.

The UAE coffee market, while valuable at $1.25 billion projected for 2025, presents a crowded landscape where differentiation becomes critical for survival3.

This saturation contrasts sharply with Blue Tokai’s home market advantage in India, where they’ve successfully built brand recognition and operational expertise over seven years.
