Indian biotech startup PeelON secures $1m seed funding
PeelON, a biotech startup based in Visakhapatnam, has raised US$1 million in seed funding led by growX ventures.
The company develops biodegradable, compostable packaging films designed to extend the shelf life of fresh produce.
Other investors in the round include Boston Venture Group, Clean Energy Venture Group, and Climate Angels.
PeelON works with farmers, exporters, and retailers in India and the US to replace single-use plastics in the supply chain.
Its products are already used for crops like cilantro, broccoli, leafy greens, rambutan, and banana in regions such as Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Texas, Florida, and California.
PeelON said it will use the new funds to expand R&D and production in Visakhapatnam, hire staff in the US and India, and pursue certifications and regulatory filings.
The company also plans to expand its packaging solutions to other markets, including Mexico and Southeast Asia.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Regulatory timing creates significant market opportunity for biodegradable packaging startups
PeelON’s funding comes at a critical regulatory inflection point that could accelerate adoption of their technology.
California will require stores to distribute only compostable or recycled paper bags by 2025, while Oregon will prohibit foam containers and promote compostable materials in food service2. These represent just the beginning of a broader regulatory shift, with Delaware banning polystyrene foam containers and Minnesota prohibiting PFAS in packaging3.
The company’s focus on the $172 billion fresh produce packaging market positions them well to capitalize on this regulatory momentum1.
Their plant-based films that extend shelf life up to 3x directly address the dual challenge facing exporters: compliance with tightening plastic regulations while maintaining product quality during transport.
2️⃣ Market fundamentals support aggressive growth projections despite early stage
PeelON’s projection of reaching $5 million revenue by FY26 from their current early commercial stage aligns with broader biodegradable packaging market dynamics.
