Indian biotech startup GreenGrahi raises $3.8m seed funding

Avaana Capital has led a 32 crore rupee (US$3.8 million) seed funding round in GreenGrahi, a biotech company based in India specializing in insect-based solutions for animal feed and agriculture.

This investment is the largest funding round in India’s insect biotech sector to date.

The funding round also included participation from Huddle Ventures, Campus Fund, Blume Founders Fund, and several angel investors, including Nitin Sharma of Nexus Ventures and Anchit Gupta of Samara Capital.

GreenGrahi plans to use the funds to establish India’s largest Black Soldier Fly (BSF) bio-factory.

Founded by Shivali Sugand and Siddharth Sharma, GreenGrahi focuses on producing insect proteins, oils, and biofertilizers using BSF biotechnology.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ India’s strategic entry into rapidly growing global insect protein markets

GreenGrahi’s ₹32 crore funding marks India’s significant entry into one of the fastest-growing alternative protein sectors in the world.

The global insect protein market is projected to grow from US$153.92 million in 2021 to US$856.08 million by 2029 at a CAGR of 24.1%, with some estimates predicting it could reach US$1.85 billion by 203312.

This investment comes at a critical inflection point as the sector matures. European markets currently hold the largest share (33.67% in 2021), creating an opportunity for India to establish early leadership in Asia-Pacific markets1.

The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) segment, which GreenGrahi specializes in, has attracted 59% of all global insect farming investments, demonstrating its position as the dominant technology in this space3.

GreenGrahi’s focus on both feed and agricultural applications aligns with market forecasts showing animal feed will likely dominate market applications, accounting for over 40% of global insect protein revenue4.

2️⃣ The substantial commercial potential in agricultural applications beyond just protein production

GreenGrahi’s dual focus on both insect protein and biological agricultural inputs represents a strategic market positioning that addresses multiple high-growth segments simultaneously.

Their biological products have demonstrated 25-30% yield improvements while enhancing soil health, responding to growing demand for sustainable agricultural inputs and aligning with the projected $8.6 billion insect biotechnology market by 20305.
