Indian aquaculture startup AquaExchange raises $8m funding

AquaExchange is an Indian aquaculture startup that has raised US$8 million in a round co-led by Endiya Partners and Factor Analytics, with participation from existing investor Accion Ventures, the company said.

Its platform uses IoT-based automation and AI-driven predictive analytics, and provides real-time monitoring, embedded financing and insurance, the company said.

The company said it monitors more than 70,000 acres and covers about 25% of the country’s active shrimp farming acreage.

Pavan Kosaraju, CEO, told ET the startup expects Rs 275 crore in revenue in FY26 and aims to be EBITDA positive this financial year.

The company said farms using its tech saw crop success rates near 85% vs. an industry benchmark of 55–60%, and that it has expanded to Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, and Madagascar, while planning an expansion in Southeast Asia within 12 months.

Other startups in the country include Aquaconnect, Pond Patrol, Eruvaka Technologies, and Farmonaut.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

AquaExchange targets an industry defined by high risks and thin margins

  • India’s shrimp exports reached US$4.88 billion, about 66% of national seafood export value, according to a 2025 review paper citing MPEDA (Marine Products Export Development Authority) data 1.
  • Disease drives steep losses, with prior estimates cited in the same review putting annual damage at US$1.02 billion across India’s shrimp industry in 2018–19 1.
  • The hit can be personal. The paper’s sensitivity analysis estimates that a 20% disease-related output drop can cut net income per hectare to about US$6,785 from roughly US$13,652 1.
  • That pressure raises the appeal of AquaExchange offerings such as embedded financing and insurance. Traditional insurance has seen low uptake, linked to distrust around claim settlement and weak verification or loss-assessment technology. The review also covers concerns about exclusions and non-coverage, including a 2021 NFDB (National Fisheries Development Board)/OICL (Oriental Insurance Company Limited) pilot that did not cover disease 1.

Aquaculture tech mirrors India’s broader B2B platform investment thesis

  • AquaExchange’s funding fits an investor view that business-to-business (B2B) platforms can organize fragmented sectors, similar to manufacturing unicorns Zetwerk and OfBusiness 2.
  • Two forces support this approach. Digitization is spreading, plus economic formalization is expanding, which opens room to simplify older operating habits 2.
  • Backers often prefer these models for steadier demand and a clearer route to profitability, since they can avoid the heavy marketing spend common in business-to-consumer (B2C) plays 2.
  • Platform scale can also improve margins per transaction, since growth does not always require more fixed capital expenditure to add customers 2.
