India-based rural solar lender secures $10m debt facility
Metafin, an India-based solar lending platform for rural MSMEs and households, has secured a US$10 million structured debt facility to expand solar financing in the country’s rural regions.
Metafin said the facility, which was provided by London-headquartered advisor Lendable, will help it lend to more customers who currently rely on diesel power.
The company said it has financed more than 6,500 projects across more than 4,000 villages in five states.
Lendable said the facility comes from its transportation and energy fund and will finance productive-use solar systems for small businesses.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Debt is one piece of Metafin’s recent funding mix
- Lendable extended a US$10 million debt facility soon after Metafin closed a separate US$10 million Series A round 1.
- The Series A blended equity with debt. Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia & India led it. Participants included Prime Venture Partners and Varanium Capital. Northern Arc and AU Small Finance Bank also joined 1.
- Metafin signed the new debt deal after reaching profitability in fiscal year 2024 2.
- By March 2025, Metafin reported an annual revenue run rate of Rs 22 crore 3. Assets under management (AUM), the total value of loans it manages, reached Rs 81 crore 3.
Remote-control financing opens a new model for rural credit
- Metafin pairs lending with a proprietary Internet of Things (IoT) technology stack of connected sensors plus software to manage loan risk 2.
- Its platform tracks energy use in real time. It can remotely switch off some financed solar plants when payments stop 2.
- The shutoff feature changes how lenders price risk in places with little formal credit history. It helps draw global capital providers like Lendable.
- This asset-backed approach could extend to other income-producing equipment in emerging markets. Examples include water pumps and farm machinery.
