India watchdog orders new probe into Foxconn’s hiring

India’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has criticized labor officials for their insufficient investigation into hiring practices at Foxconn’s iPhone assembly plant in Tamil Nadu.

The NHRC has ordered a new investigation into allegations of employment discrimination at Foxconn. Specifically, the company is accused of excluding married women from assembly line jobs, only relaxing the policy during high-production periods.

Documents under India’s Right to Information laws revealed that 6.7% of the 33,360 women working at the factory were married. However, the Tamil Nadu labor officials did not confirm whether they worked on the assembly line.

The NHRC found the investigations lacking, as officials failed to examine hiring records or determine if discrimination occurred during recruitment.

Advertisements from Foxconn recruiters reportedly included restrictions on age, gender, and marital status, violating anti-discrimination rules, but Foxconn has since removed such criteria from job postings.
