India urges Apple, Google to pre-install gov’t app suite
India’s technology ministry has requested Apple and Google to include its state-supported app suite, Gov.in, into their marketplaces. Currently, these apps are available individually in app stores.
The government also want these apps pre-installed on smartphones sold in India.
The Indian government aims to increase usage by ensuring the entire suite is easily accessible and downloadable without untrusted source warnings.
Google, which powers over 90% of India’s smartphone, is hesitant, and Apple is unlikely to comply without legal changes.
This initiative is similar to Apple’s 2021 decision in Russia to allow users to install government-recommended apps.
Representatives from India’s technology ministry, Apple, and Google did not comment when approached regarding this matter.
