India is set to produce its first domestically manufactured semiconductor chip by September or October 2025, according to IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Tata Electronics is building a semiconductor unit in Dholera, Gujarat, with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation.

Meanwhile, Micron’s assembly and testing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, is 60% complete.

The government has also allocated 334 crore rupee (US$38.52 million) to IISc Bengaluru for research in gallium nitride technology, crucial for telecommunications and power sectors.

The ministry is finalizing the first phase of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM 1.0), including upgrading a semiconductor lab in Mohali, with ISM 2.0 preparations to follow Cabinet approval.

This initiative is part of India’s push to become a global semiconductor hub under the Semicon India program, launched in 2021 with an outlay of 76,000 crore rupee (US$8.76 billion).
