Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s IT minister, announced plans to host Chinese AI lab DeepSeek’s large language models on domestic servers, addressing data privacy concerns.

This decision is significant as it marks one of the few instances of Chinese technology being allowed in India, especially given the country’s strict data localization policies.

DeepSeek’s models will be supported by India’s upcoming AI Compute Facility.

This move is notable as India has banned over 300 Chinese apps since 2020 due to security concerns.

Vaishnaw emphasized India’s commitment to fostering indigenous AI innovation while hosting foreign models.

The country is investing in hyperscale infrastructure, including Reliance’s data center, and is collaborating with global chip designers to strengthen its AI ecosystem.

India is also developing a regulatory body for AI safety and funding AI applications in sectors like agriculture and climate change.
