India to develop national AI model, prime minister says

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi announced plans to create a national large language model (LLM) for AI research during a virtual post-Budget webinar on Mar. 5, 2025. He highlighted the necessity for increased investments in the AI sector.

The government has allocated US$57.5 million to support AI-driven education and research initiatives.

This decision aligns with the government’s ongoing focus on the IndiaAI mission, previously outlined by its union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in January.

As part of these initiatives, the government approved the acquisition of 18,693 graphics processing units (GPUs), required for building machine learning tools.

Indian startups, researchers, and entrepreneurs are invited to collaborate on creating foundational AI models that cater to Indian datasets.
