India to allow payments via facial recognition, fingerprints
India will allow users to authenticate payments on its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) network using facial recognition and fingerprints from October 8, according to three sources familiar with the matter.
The new authentication process will use biometric data stored in India’s Aadhar identification system.
This change follows guidelines from the Reserve Bank of India that permit alternative authentication methods beyond the current numeric PIN system.
The National Payments Corporation of India, which runs UPI, is expected to present the biometric feature at the Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai.
UPI is a widely used digital payments platform in India.
