India tells Meta to pause WhatsApp username rollout
India’s government has asked Meta to pause the planned rollout of WhatsApp usernames in the country and explain the feature within three days, amid concerns it could enable impersonation and identity fraud.
Usernames are expected later this year and would let WhatsApp users connect without sharing phone numbers.
Meta said linking WhatsApp with Facebook or Instagram through Accounts Center would remain optional.
The company also said existing Facebook and Instagram usernames would be reserved for their owners during the reservation period.
Usernames tied to public figures, celebrities, government entities, and verified Meta accounts would remain protected.
The feature also appears aimed at business discovery. A WhatsApp Business video says customers can find and connect with businesses.
Users and experts have also raised questions about data sharing and cross-platform integration, though Meta said usernames would not change how Accounts Center works.
