India tech job openings fall 8% in April on AI shift

India’s active tech job openings fell 8% to 110,000 this month from 119,000 in March, according to staffing firm Xpheno, as hiring stayed weak for a fourth straight quarter amid cost controls and AI-led efficiency.

Openings are down sharply from 256,000 in April 2022, and tech’s share of total hiring has dropped to 49% from 83% during the post-pandemic hiring surge, Xpheno said.

GCC openings fell 21% month-on-month, IT services jobs were down 7% sequentially and year-on-year, consulting roles fell 33%, and mid-junior roles dropped 25%, while full-time openings slipped 3% and contract roles fell 17%.

TeamLease Digital CEO Neeti Sharma and Adecco India director Sanketh Chengappa said firms are delaying rather than canceling hiring, with GCCs still adding niche talent selectively, while metro hiring fell 29% year-on-year and tier two and tier three cities rose 10%.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

India’s tech jobs are no longer just in the tech industry

  • April tech job openings fell after a brief March jump to 119,000 listings, up 9% month on month and the highest level in three quarters 1.
  • The swings track a broader change, with banking, retail, and manufacturing making up 53% of demand for tech and engineering roles 1.
  • Companies are placing more tech roles in smaller cities to cut costs and improve retention 1.
  • Hiring in metros fell 29% year on year, while tier two and tier three cities rose 10% 1. Employers cite cost savings, though 1 gives no support for a 30% to 40% pay gap claim.

AI is creating a two-tier system for tech talent

  • TCS CEO K Krithivasan (the chief executive of Tata Consultancy Services, a major Indian IT services company) says AI is reshaping roles rather than removing them, yet revenue is separating from headcount 2.
  • Large IT services firms are trimming total staff as automation takes on more entry-level coding and testing, even as business expands 2.
  • Openings for entry-level and junior roles fell 25%.
  • Engineers with AI-native skills can earn 2 to 3 times more than peers in traditional roles, widening gaps in pay and access to jobs 2.
