India rolls out AI across government, adoption still limited
India is rolling out AI across several government departments for tasks ranging from weather forecasting to court document translation.
Ministries are using AI-based tools for experimental weather prediction, disease diagnosis, meeting transcription, and process optimization.
The Ministry of Science and Technology cited models such as the Advanced Dvorak Technique and hybrid AI systems for cyclone forecasting and weather prediction.
Indian Railways is using AI to automate handover notes and monitor cleanliness through sensor cameras, while public sector firms in steel and mining are adopting AI for cost optimization and anomaly detection.
AI is also being used in public health for clinical decision support and diabetic retinopathy screening, and in the judiciary to translate court judgments into local languages.
The government has introduced AI governance guidelines and set up an inter-ministerial group, though officials say adoption remains limited and focused on non-critical functions.
