Ola Electric gains share despite India’s April EV drop

Ola Electric increased its market share in April even as India’s electric two-wheeler registrations fell 22% month on month to 148,000 units from 192,000 according to Vahan data, a proxy for sales in the country.

The company’s registrations rose more than 20% to 12,166, lifting its market share to 8.18% from 5.4%.

Rivals saw declines, with TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto retaining the top two spots but reporting drops in volumes. Ather Energy and Hero MotoCorp also posted weaker sales.

The broader slowdown followed a March peak driven by discounting and inventory push, after the market grew about 22% in FY26.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

April’s sales dip follows a predictable incentive-driven surge

  • April’s market-wide sales decline looks like a comedown after March, rather than clear evidence of softer demand.
  • March got a lift from buyers moving early before subsidies shrank. Under FAME-II, India’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles program, support at times covered up to 40% of an electric two-wheeler’s ex-factory price. Incentives under PM E-DRIVE, the government’s newer electric-vehicle support program, are lower 1.
  • Ola Electric logged more than 20% month-on-month growth in April. Even so, its FY26 volumes were down more than 53% from FY25 amid service issues and supply constraints, based on Vahan data 2.

The market is shifting from startup disruption to legacy execution

  • Monthly sales also fit a broader shift in India’s electric two-wheeler market, with TVS and Bajaj now setting the pace 23.
  • As the buyer base widens, everyday commuters are putting reliability and after-sales support ahead of novelty 23.
  • Those established brands benefit from dealer reach, consumer trust, and service capacity. Ola Electric has struggled on the service front in recent months 2.
  • The contest now rests on steady execution. Companies need to build at scale, keep service running, and stay financially durable 2.
