Indian climate tech firm Varaha secures $20m series B

India-based climate tech startup Varaha has raised US$20 million in a series B funding round led by WestBridge Capital, with participation from RTP Global and Omnivore.

Founded in 2022, Varaha develops carbon removal projects in Asia and Africa.

The company has removed over 2 million tons of CO2 and issued around 150,000 carbon removal credits through international registries.

It reported last year’s revenue of approximately US$4.8 million and expects to reach US$22 million this year while remaining profitable.

The new funding will support expansion into Vietnam, Indonesia, and other markets in South and Southeast Asia, as well as the growth of its Industrial Partners Program.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Varaha’s credibility is built on deals with Google and Microsoft

  • Before the round, Varaha signed long-term carbon removal offtake agreements with Google for 100,000 tons due in 2030, plus Microsoft for over 100,000 tons across three years. Both cover biochar-based carbon removal in India 1.
  • Varaha says the contracts lower project risk, which can open project finance for expansion 1.
  • Varaha pitches itself as a lower-cost supplier by using India’s agricultural supply chains plus local talent. Price pressure has grown as corporate carbon-credit buyers compare bids 2.
  • Mirova is a French asset manager focused on sustainable investing. It invested 26.4 million euro, about $30 million, to expand Varaha’s regenerative agriculture plus soil organic carbon work across more than 337,000 smallholder farms 3.

This funding signals a move from climate tech R&D to global supply chain execution

  • Varaha’s growth tracks a shift in climate tech funding toward scaling proven carbon-removal methods across regions.
  • The edge comes from field operations that coordinate many smallholder farmers plus industrial partners 2.
  • Senken reports biochar accounts for over 90% of durable carbon removal delivered worldwide 4.
  • Microsoft already buys millions of tons of carbon removal credits. Firms that deliver volume on schedule at competitive prices may take the lead in the next phase of climate action 5.
