India clears $751m electronics component manufacturing push

India approved 29 proposals under its electronics component manufacturing program, with planned investment of 71.04 billion rupees (US$751.2 million), the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said.

The proposals cover mobile manufacturing, telecom, consumer electronics, and automotive.

India’s electronics manufacturing sector produced goods worth US$125 billion in the year to March 2025, and aims to increase output to US$500 billion by fiscal 2031.

A Dixon Technologies unit won approval to make display modules, while Lohum Cleantech was cleared to produce rare-earth permanent magnets, which is called India’s first such project from rare-earth oxide.

India is also weighing new incentives for local mobile phone production as its flagship scheme expires in March.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

India’s US$2.7 billion scheme targets specific high-value components

  • The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) runs for six years and totals US$2.7 billion (₹229.19 billion). It aims to cut India’s dependence on imported parts 1.
  • A US$751.2 million investment came in a fourth approval round. Total cleared investment now stands at ₹61,671 crore, about US$7.4 billion 2.
  • Incentives vary by component. The plan includes a 25% capex (capital expenditure) incentive for selected bare components such as HDI (high-density interconnect)/MSAP (modified semi-additive process)/flexible PCB (printed circuit board) and SMD (surface-mount device) passive components. Camera modules get a turnover-based incentive 3.
  • Lohum received approval for a ₹700 crore project in Uttar Pradesh. CNBC-TV18 called it India’s first rare-earth permanent magnets facility in this approval round 2.

The policy moves beyond assembly toward component depth

  • The approvals push beyond incentives for final assembly and put more focus on components. A PIB (Press Information Bureau) release put smartphone exports above ₹2 lakh crore in the last financial year. It also put iPhone exports at about ₹1.5 lakh crore for FY 2024-25 4.
  • The plan also funds capital equipment, which supports building the tools used to produce other tools. The minister compared it to the India Semiconductor Mission and said it helped draw investment from Applied Materials (a semiconductor manufacturing equipment supplier) and Lam Research (a chipmaking equipment company) 4.
  • A stronger domestic supply chain can support automotive, power electronics, and medical devices that depend on these components 4.
  • The government said electronics component manufacturers that do not invest in deep in-house design capabilities may be “weeded out.” The intent is capability upgrades rather than higher output alone 2.
