India bets $18b to build chip powerhouse
India has approved 10 semiconductor projects worth US$18.2 billion as it aims to build a local chip industry and reduce reliance on imports amid a global push for semiconductor self-sufficiency.
The country, one of the world’s largest electronics consumers, currently has a minimal role in the global chip supply chain and lacks domestic manufacturing capabilities.
Recent government efforts include incentives for chip fabrication and support for electronic component production, hoping to create a full supply chain from design to packaging.
Major projects include Tata Electronics and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. building a US$11 billion chip plant in Gujarat, and the UK’s Clas-SiC Wafer Fab partnering with SiCSem for a compound semiconductor facility in Odisha.
India’s chip ambitions are seen as a long-term effort, with significant hurdles remaining before it can compete with established players like the US, Europe, and Taiwan.
