India approves $4.6b electronics manufacturing project

India has approved electronic component manufacturing projects valued at US$4.6 billion, the IT ministry said.

Companies including Samsung Electronics, Tata Electronics, and Foxconn will receive government subsidies under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme.

The projects span eight states and will produce items such as mobile phone enclosures and camera sub-assemblies.

The ministry said the projects are expected to generate US$28.6 billion worth of components and create about 34,000 jobs.

India’s electronics manufacturing output reached US$125 billion in the year ending March 2025.

The government aims to raise this to US$500 billion by fiscal 2031 through incentive programs to boost investment and local capacity.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

India’s approvals lean to PCBs and a few giants, with subsidy terms unclear

  • 22 approvals center on printed circuit boards and enclosures 1. Nine PCB applicants include India Circuits Private Limited and Signum Electronics Limited. Enclosure picks cover Yuzhan Technology (India) Private Limited and Motherson Electronic Components Private Limited. The IT ministry did not share subsidy rates, payment timelines, or per-project capital expenditures (capex) 1.
  • Samsung Display Noida Private Limited and Tata Electronics Private Limited made the cut 21. The scheme uses a “race” model that pays firms that finish roadmaps first. That setup could hurt smaller local component makers such as Vital Electronics Private Limited and Deki Electronics Limited 21.
  • Projected output of INR 2,58,152 crore (about 2.58 trillion rupees) assumes approved firms reach full capacity on time 12. Electronics & IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw urged Six Sigma and integrated Research and Development (R&D), which signals focus on quality and design 12.

Ancillary equipment providers can set up in approved states before competition intensifies

  • Automation, testing gear, and material handling firms should target the eight approved states as projects scale 1.
  • Approvals went to ATLbattery Technology (India) Private Limited for lithium-ion cells and NPSPL Advanced Materials Private Limited for anode material. These moves will lift demand for battery manufacturing equipment and thermal management systems 1.
  • About 51,000 direct jobs span 46 approvals to date 1. Training providers and industrial real estate developers in these states can adjust offerings 1. Tooling, packaging, and logistics will add indirect work.
