India AI jobs rising 15-20%, minister says
At the CII Annual Business Summit, India’s Union electronics and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said AI-related jobs are rising 15% to 20% based on feedback from the IT industry.
He urged companies to work with Nasscom to train workers for new technology as other parts of the IT industry change.
Vaishnaw also said tax waivers for data centers until 2047 are drawing about US$200 billion in investment.
India is planning three subsea cable networks to Australia and the US through routes that also pass the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.
He added that HP has started making AI servers in India and said he has asked Google and other companies to begin local production.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
India’s US$200 billion claim comes with a targeted tax break and separate big tech plans
- The minister cited US$200 billion. Confirmed plans from cloud companies add up to less so far, including Google’s US$15 billion, Microsoft’s US$17.5 billion by 2029, and Amazon’s US$35 billion by 2030 1.
- The tax break runs until 2047 for foreign cloud providers on revenue from services sold outside India, as long as the workloads run from Indian data centers 1.
- Services sold inside India must go through locally incorporated resellers and face standard Indian taxes 2.
- The policy also sets a 15% cost-plus safe harbor for Indian data center operators serving related foreign entities. That gives more certainty on transfer pricing, the tax rules for deals between affiliated entities in different countries 2.
The AI server push is part of a broader plan that still runs into physical limits
- The strategy reaches beyond data centers. Vaishnaw urged companies including Google to expand local production of servers, graphics processing units (GPUs), and semiconductor chips in India 3.
- Google is weighing investments in India across AI infrastructure, server manufacturing, and drone production 3. Its US$15 billion AI hub plan is in Visakhapatnam, a port city in southeastern India 3.
- Execution still faces physical limits, including patchy power supply, high electricity costs, and water scarcity 2.
- Those gaps could slow construction, raise operating costs for AI-focused data centers, and weaken the effect of the tax break 2.
