IFC leads $6.2m series B in Indian EV startup Kazam
Electric mobility technology firm Kazam has raised US$6.2 million in a series B funding round led by the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Existing investors Vertex Ventures and Avaana Capital also participated in this funding round.
With this investment, Kazam’s total funding has reached US$19.2 million. This total includes $13 million from previous equity financing rounds.
The company plans to use the funds to expand its digital electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure offerings and promote sustainable transportation.
Founded in 2020, Kazam provides solutions for charging and battery swapping operators, fleet operators, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ India faces a massive EV charging infrastructure gap that companies like Kazam are racing to fill
India’s current EV-to-charging station ratio stands at 135:1, dramatically higher than the global average of 6:20, highlighting the severe infrastructure deficit in one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets1.
With only 5,234 charging stations currently operational against a target of 46,397 needed by 2030, India faces a critical infrastructure bottleneck that could impede its ambitious goal of having 30% of new private vehicles be electric by the end of the decade1.
Kazam’s growth trajectory, expanding from $1.5 million to $6 million in annual revenue within a year while facilitating over 5 million charging sessions, demonstrates the significant market demand for EV infrastructure solutions despite these challenges.
This gap explains why investors like IFC are targeting India’s charging infrastructure, seeing it as essential to “accelerating India’s economic growth and energy transition,” as stated by IFC’s Country Head for India.
The charging infrastructure deficit is particularly acute in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, creating opportunities for companies with flexible, device-agnostic solutions that can be deployed across diverse geographical contexts2.
2️⃣ Global investor confidence in EV charging is reaching new heights despite uncertain timelines
Kazam’s $6.2 million raise is part of a much larger investment trend, with EV charging companies globally securing nearly $14 billion since 2022, including over $3 billion in just the first half of 20243.
This surge in investment comes as the global EV charging market reached $25.83 billion in valuation last year, driven by both private capital and government initiatives like the $2.5 billion U.S. Department of Transportation grant program for charging infrastructure4.
