IBM posts 9% revenue growth to $16.3b in Q3

IBM reported Q3 2025 revenue of US$16.3 billion, up 9% from the previous year.

Software revenue rose 10% to US$7.2 billion, consulting climbed 3% to US$5.3 billion, and infrastructure jumped 17% to US$3.6 billion.

Net income reached US$1.7 billion, with a gross profit margin of 57.3%, and pre-tax income margin at 14.9% under GAAP.

The company generated US$3.1 billion in operating cash flow for the quarter and US$9.2 billion year-to-date.

Free cash flow for Q3 was US$2.4 billion, and IBM returned US$1.6 billion to shareholders through dividends.

IBM ended the quarter with US$14.9 billion in cash and marketable securities, and US$63.1 billion in total debt.

The board approved a quarterly dividend of US$1.68 per share, payable December 10, 2025.

IBM now expects over 5% constant currency revenue growth and about US$14 billion in free cash flow for full-year 2025.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The $9.5B AI book of business lacks crucial detail on revenue timing and composition

  • IBM’s press release says its AI book of business is $9.5B, up from $7.5B in Q2 1. It does not say if this is pipeline (early-stage prospective deals); total contract value (full dollar value over the life of signed contracts); annual recurring revenue (subscription revenue expected each year); or backlog (signed work not yet delivered).
  • Investors lack a conversion timeline for when bookings turn into recognized revenue and cash, plus a split between consulting engagements (project-based services) and software subscriptions. That gap makes it hard to map the $9.5B to IBM’s $14B free cash flow guide 2 or the “more than 5%” revenue growth outlook 3.
  • IBM’s Q3 call transcript often defines these metrics 4. Morgan Stanley’s preview said AI consulting bookings (signed deals awaiting delivery) would grow yet add little to the quarter’s revenue 5.

Systems integrators and ISVs can capture AI implementation demand in IBM’s growth verticals

  • Software revenue rose 10% and Infrastructure grew 17% 1. IBM Z still anchors regulated workloads 6. IBM plans to bring high-speed inference from Groq into watsonx 7, and HashiCorp (multi-cloud infrastructure automation) plus DataStax (real-time data on Apache Cassandra) are acquisitions 5. That opens work for systems integrators (firms that design plus implement complex IT solutions for enterprises) and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs, companies that build plus sell software products).
