IBM launches new tools to integrate multiple AI agents

IBM announced new tools to help businesses manage and integrate multiple AI agents.

CEO Arvind Krishna said the tools allow integration of AI agents from providers like Salesforce, Workday, and Adobe.

Businesses can also build custom agents using IBM’s Granite AI models and models from companies like Meta and Mistral.

Krishna noted growing interest in using diverse AI models for specific tasks, calling it an opportunity for IBM. The company recently reported a US$6 billion generative AI portfolio.

As a smaller cloud provider, IBM targets customers seeking multi-cloud setups or private data management. These new tools aim to boost growth in that segment.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ IBM’s AI pivot reflects decades-long evolution, not a sudden shift

IBM’s current integration strategy is rooted in a 70-year AI journey that began long before the current generative AI boom.

The company’s AI research dates back to the 1950s, with watershed moments including Deep Blue defeating chess champion Garry Kasparov and Watson winning Jeopardy! in 2011 1.

This evolution mirrors IBM’s historical adaptability, transforming from manufacturing tabulators and clocks into a technology pioneer 2.

The recent watsonx platform launch in 2023 represents a culmination of this journey, integrating generative AI, machine learning, and data governance specifically for enterprise applications 3.

Unlike competitors focused primarily on consumer-facing generative AI, IBM has deliberately positioned its Granite AI models for enterprise use with curated datasets across specialized domains 3.

This enterprise-first approach explains why IBM is now focusing on integration tools rather than competing directly with foundational model providers. They are leveraging their historical strengths in business solutions.

2️⃣ Integration strategy targets the fragmented enterprise AI landscape

IBM’s new integration tools address a critical challenge revealed in their CEO study: while AI investment is expected to double in the next two years, only 25% of initiatives currently achieve expected ROI 4.
