IBM invests in Israeli genAI app design startup Anima
Anima, an AI design-to-code platform based in Tel Aviv, announced a strategic investment from IBM to support enterprise adoption of AI-driven app development.
Founded in 2017 and backed by Y Combinator, Anima’s platform integrates with design tools like Figma, enabling teams to generate front-end code directly from designs.
The company’s solutions are used by organizations including Amazon, Samsung, and Apple, and claim to speed up project delivery by up to 50%.
IBM’s investment aims to enhance Anima’s AI agents, which help automate UI generation and improve integration with enterprise systems.
The company said the investment will support its goal to expand AI’s role in enterprise product teams.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Anima’s investment builds on years of pre-generative-AI traction
- Anima said it became profitable by the end of 2019 and raised a $10 million Series A in 2021, before the generative AI boom 1.
- Adoption came from a product-led, “bottoms-up” approach that let designers using tools like Figma start for free. By 2021, more than 5% of free users upgraded to paid plans 2.
- IBM did not share the investment amount. IBM framed it as a strategic investment, not a large disclosed financing round 3.
The investment signals a broader shift in enterprise AI strategy and developer roles
- The deal fits IBM Ventures’ focus on funding AI across the stack, including tools that help software developers work faster, instead of building every product internally 4.
- IBM also partners with outside companies such as Adobe and Salesforce, while backing startups 5.
- “Design-to-code” platforms that generate front-end code from designs can shrink the “design-handoff-build loop,” which can blur the line between designers and front-end developers 6.
- The market also wants specialized AI agents for tasks like producing on-brand user interface (UI), where general-purpose models still fall short 6.
