IBM said on May 28 it had committed US$5 billion to Project Lightwell, an initiative due to launch as a commercial service within 30 days.

The offering will use engineers and AI tools to help companies secure open-source software and manage risks across the software supply chain.

Open-source software, or code that anyone can use and modify, underpins most corporate technology systems.

But its broad use has also made it a target for hackers, and IBM said AI was making it easier for attackers to identify and exploit vulnerabilities.

IBM and its hybrid cloud unit Red Hat piloted Project Lightwell with Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, and Visa.

IBM said subscribers would be able to report security flaws confidentially, receive tested fixes, and plug vetted security patches into their existing systems.
