Hyundai-owned Boston Dynamics unlikely to pursue 2027 IPO
Boston Dynamics, a US-based robotics company owned by Hyundai Motor Group, is unlikely to pursue an initial public offering next year because it remains lossmaking and has yet to deploy its Atlas humanoid robot at scale, a senior Hyundai executive said.
The executive said a listing next year “won’t be easy,” and Hyundai Motor Group has not disclosed a timetable or valuation target for any offering.
Hyundai bought a controlling stake in Boston Dynamics in 2021 and said in July it would acquire SoftBank’s roughly 10% stake, making the robot maker a wholly owned subsidiary.
The deal was likely worth about 500 billion won (US$371 million).
A filing by Hyundai Glovis, a South Korean logistics affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group that holds about 11% of Boston Dynamics, showed the company posted a 2025 loss of 528.4 billion won (US$391 million). Its cumulative losses since 2021 reached nearly 1.7 trillion won (US$1.26 billion).
Boston Dynamics already has other commercial products, with its Stretch robot available for purchase as a warehouse robot.
