Hyundai union seeks $2b bonus, raise cost pressure

Hyundai Motor’s labor union is seeking bonuses equal to 30% of the company’s 2025 net profit, or more than 3 trillion won (US$2 billion).

The proposal also asks for a 149,600 won (US$100) monthly base pay rise, a bonus increase from 750% to 800% of base salary, stronger job security tied to AI, a higher retirement age of 65, and more hiring.

The union also includes equal sharing of profit-based bonuses with employees at partner firms.

The demand comes as unions at other major South Korean conglomerates push for larger performance payouts.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

AI robots and new labor laws fuel Hyundai’s union demands

  • The union wants job protections because Hyundai plans to put the physical AI robot “Atlas” on vehicle assembly work in 2030, part of its move toward an unmanned factory 1.
  • Its call to share bonuses with partner firms uses the new “Yellow Envelope Act,” a South Korean labor law that expands the duty of main contractors toward subcontracted workers and raises pressure in supplier talks 2. It is the first known case of a main contractor’s union putting supplier performance bonuses into collective bargaining since the law took effect 2.
  • The union also wants a bonus equal to 30% of Hyundai Motor’s 2025 net profit. That goes beyond Samsung Electronics’ union request for bonuses tied to 15% of operating profit and SK hynix’s deal to set aside 10% of operating profit for bonuses 3.

Beyond bonuses, the union’s demands anticipate AI’s impact on wages

  • The package aims to reshape factory pay before automation spreads. A “full monthly salary system” would help protect income if AI robots cut hours on the factory floor 4.
  • A win here could give unions in other manufacturing fields a model as automation grows. Talks may shift toward income guarantees even when hours fall 2.
  • This has become a global example of the fight over AI’s gains. Hyundai’s union is asking for a set share of future profits from AI, a tactic that may spread worldwide as AI deployment speeds up 1.
